The simulated archaeology of contemporary art: from Hirst to Tincolini, between myth and sedimentation

Marina Piccola Cerrotta, Artuu Magazine, June 11, 2025

The online magazine Artuu, in an article by Marina Piccola Cerrotta, explores the need of contemporary art to narrate the present through our history. Seven artists have been selected to demonstrate how “the (re)interpretation of antiquity (…) often emerges (…) as a starting point for the narration of a hypothetical tomorrow, a forecast of what our projected image in the future might be. An urgency, perhaps, dictated by the need to understand what will remain—that is, what the legacies of our age will be and the furrows traced in the soil of memory.” The central question is: “if we are the creative continuation of what preceded us, what warning are we sending forth?”

The seven chosen artists are Damien Hirst, Fabio Viale, Coderch & Malavia, Mimmo Jodice, Luca Pignatelli, Igor Mitoraj, and Filippo Tincolini.
