"Camazotz" merges the mythological narrative of the Maya with the iconography of the modern superhero. This bust shows no lacerations, breaks, or fractures; it is not a rediscovered sculpture but deliberately the portrait of the god/superhero, the bat god of Maya mythology who, by day, is trapped in the stone, ready to break free at the arrival of night.

The work evokes a tension between movement and stillness, as if the bust, captured at the moment when the god is about to escape his condition as an inanimate sculpture, is poised to come to life as soon as dusk falls, evoking a powerful duality of meanings central to the artist’s work.

The marble, materially rich and visually imposing, enhances the mysterious and menacing figure of Camazotz, accentuating the aura of power and fear surrounding both the ancient deity and the modern superhero.

Dual identity, sacrifice, and protection are themes that place the work in a contemporary dialogue that transcends time and space, linking ancient legends to modern narratives in a struggle against our darkest fears.
